I just want to pick your brains about something...

What do you reckon is the best way to organize your items in chests?

Do you sort them by different types / categories of items? (i.e. redstone, weapons/armour, food etc)

Do you sort them alphabetically? (This is how I sort them at the moment... chests... chests everywhere)

Is there any other way you sort your loot?

Welcoming any thoughts / ideas / whatever.

I organize mine by category. Weapons in one, wool in one, cobblestone in one, etc. If I get enough of one specific item then it gets its own chest. I also separate the wood by type, and every item that still retains its unique wood characteristic (e.g. birch stairs, or birch slab) go in that chest as well, but any wood items that loose their unique wood characteristic (chests, sticks, etc.) get put into a "misc. wood" chest.

I've got all my items sorted alphabetically. 3 chests for each letter of the alphabet.

So yeah, 3 x 26 x 2(double chests) = A LOT OF CHESTS.

I tried sorting things into categories, but I found it a bit complicated, as there would be certain items that I wouldn't know where to put. Instead, I dug out a large underground room, and put all my chests in there. I use 3 double chests per letter.

As is the case with you, cashm0, some items that I have a lot of get placed in a separate chest i.e. redstone, rails, dirt etc.

drachenezz, how did you do it? I'd be interested to give it a try myself. Did you use command blocks and stuff? It's the only way I can think of at the moment.

Theres some quite cool item sorters out there, really compact and work good as, just search youtube, i have one myself for my gold farm, but i havent implemented it into my house yet :)

I create little areas, say Books, Potions, Weapons, Valuables, Food, Wood, Building materials, Newbie equipment, Misc. Then put aside chests in those areas, like for books I'll have Sharp, Protect, Efficiency, Power, Good books and Misc Books chests. But I'll leave space for expansion just in case I start doing a lot of enchanting and may need 2 of each chest.

my way. /give itemId james137137 and /clearinventory :p

I used to have them sorted in categories. and to sort my chest after in categories I would use a mod called Inventory Tweaks Website here.

I love them redstone sorting machines, I once made one of those, but you need to have a lot of iron and redstone (about 2 hoppers per item)

house keeping for me is never fun but it has to be done else you will be spending 30 min trying to look for that enchanted pick.

I would even make separate chest for gears like PVP gear or mining gear.

usually item sorters are no good on servers due to the items passing through hoppers faster then redstone turning on with server lag
